The NZPSA is a collegial association of individuals that exists to promote and encourage the study of politics in all of its guises. Founded in 1974, it is the premier organisation of its kind in New Zealand.
While the bulk of its members are University-based academics, the Association also embraces local and national politicians, parliamentary officers, diplomats, journalists, students, secondary-school teachers, pollsters and non-academic political commentators. It showcases all aspects of New Zealand politics, and is the home for both the New Zealand political theory network and the media and political communications network, but is by no means confined to these areas. It welcomes members from a diversity of political perspectives and backgrounds, and from a broad range of academic specialities: history, law, philosophy, literary theory, labour relations, sociology, cultural studies, media studies, indigenous studies, gender and ethnic studies, as well as international relations, institutional and comparative politics, political theory, and political science.
The NZPSA hosts an annual conference that attracts national and international participants, and is the national forum for the annual postgraduate meeting. It awards an annual prize for the best postgraduate conference paper on New Zealand politics, the best postgraduate conference paper in any other field of political studies and the best undergraduate paper submitted in a course on New Zealand domestic politics.
The NZPSA works actively with all the political studies departments and programs in New Zealand, is affiliated with the journal Political Science, and has links with similar political studies associations internationally. Members enjoy various conference benefits nationally and internationally.
